The speculation surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team might be crafting a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—qualities that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also notoriously permissive, letting players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.
- You might find an answer because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
